Subscriptions & Purchases

Plain-language first. Each section opens with a short summary in ordinary words, then the actual terms. The summaries are there to be read; the terms are what govern. Where they ever seem to disagree, the terms are what apply. This is a real agreement between you and the person who makes The Familiar — it isn’t legal advice to you, and reading it doesn’t make me your lawyer.

1.Free, and paid

Keeping a Familiar — the creature, all the games, Roam — is free forever. A subscription adds the parts that cost real money to run: the journalling, the memory, and the stories. A free Familiar is a whole, contented creature, never a nagged one.

The creature and its activities (petting, chase, graze, feeding, Roam and its downtime) are free, with no account charge. A subscription unlocks the AI features: conversational journalling, continuity and memory, the stories and worlds, dreams, and motes drawn from your own life. Some smaller one-off items (such as energy top-ups or extra rebirths) may be offered as separate purchases.

2.How billing works

All purchases are made and billed through your app store — the Apple App Store or Google Play — using the payment method on your store account. I don’t process or see your payment details. Prices are shown in the app before you buy, in your local currency where the store supports it, and may include tax.

3.Auto-renewing subscriptions

A subscription renews on its own until you cancel it, and you cancel it in your app store’s account settings — not in this app.

A subscription is an auto-renewable purchase. It renews automatically for the same period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends, and your store charges the renewal within the 24 hours before it begins. You manage and cancel subscriptions in your app-store account settings; cancelling stops future renewals and takes effect at the end of the period you’ve already paid for.

4.One-off items

Consumable items (like energy top-ups or extra rebirths) are made available once purchased and are used within the app. Because they’re delivered immediately, they are generally non-refundable except where the law or your app store provides otherwise.

5.Price changes

Prices can change. If the price of a subscription you hold changes, your app store will handle notifying you and, where required, asking you to confirm before the new price takes effect. You can always cancel rather than accept a change.

6.Refunds

Because purchases go through the app stores, refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their policies — I can’t directly refund a store purchase. Request refunds through the store you bought from. Nothing here removes any statutory refund or cancellation right you have where you live.

7.If you cancel or delete your account

Cancelling a subscription leaves the paid features available until the end of the period you’ve paid for, then returns you to the free tier — where your creature and the games keep working. Note that deleting your account in the app does not automatically cancel a subscription billed by your app store; cancel that separately in your store settings. See Delete your data.
