The Familiar is built by Eva Lothian. Every mechanic in it has been checked against the same short list of rules, and several good ideas were cut for failing them.
What every part of it gets checked against.
A reason to return that isn’t manufactured. If a mechanic works by creating obligation, it’s out. That single rule removed streaks, reminders, notification nags, and a creature that misses you — which are most of the standard toolkit.
Distance. The engine infers a great deal about a person from what they write. Passive, out-of-band influence is fine; a model acting on its read of your psychology in real time is not. Interactive branching narrative was designed and then rejected on this.
It is never a readout. The moment the creature reflects your mood back at you, the app becomes a scoreboard for your week and the honest entry stops being the one you make.
Under the hood
Feelings use the PAD model (Mehrabian and Russell, 1974); temperament is a five-factor profile, mapped down to a Jungian type only as a coarse index into how it speaks. Established psychology, used as intended, rather than a mood system invented for an app.
The knowledge and memory layer is Liminalis, a document-intelligence platform built alongside this. If you want the engineering rather than the creature, that’s where it lives.
